Discover the Enchanting Art of Lizzie Black: A Local Gem in Mousehole
Mousehole, a picturesque village brimming with charm and history, is home to the talented artist Lizzie Black. Known for her captivating plein air paintings, Lizzie masterfully captures the essence and atmosphere of Mousehole. From the vibrant fishing boats to the tranquil harbour views extending towards the Mount, her exquisite use of light and colour brings these scenes to life, creating artwork that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.
Rooted in the tradition of plein air painting, Lizzie’s work beautifully mirrors the changing patterns of the day, seasons, and weather. “I strive to capture transitory moments of light, colour, tide, and time, and to communicate its beauty and magic on canvas,” Lizzie explains. This dynamic approach allows her to encapsulate the ever-shifting moods of the Cornish landscape.
Lizzie’s journey as an artist began at a young age, inspired by her father, the renowned artist Bernard Evans. She started accompanying him on painting excursions around Penwith at the age of 12, observing and learning from his techniques. Encouraged to follow in his footsteps, Lizzie embraced plein air painting and pursued formal training at Bristol Art School and Falmouth School of Art.
Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout Cornwall, the West Country, and even at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Lizzie’s paintings are cherished in collections across the UK, USA, Europe, and Australia.
In addition to her impressive portfolio, Lizzie is also a dedicated teacher, offering regular painting tuition sessions. “Painting within the landscape is an utterly absorbing art practice. By working onsite, my aim is not to copy, but to find a way of communicating experience,” she shares. Her approach emphasises instinctive, unprejudiced expression, capturing the physical activity of movement, sound, wind, and light changes.
